DESE Learning Targets
The Arkansas Division of Elementary and Secondary Education has prepared guides for parents or guardians which outline essential learning targets for students in grades K-8 for literacy, science, math, and social studies. Parents and guardians may print out these guides and post them on the refrigerator or keep one in the car for road trips. Educators may use these guides to provide parents with activities to work on with students at home.
The learning target guides also have companion guides which provide one or more activities for each learning target.
Student Assessment Information
Arkansas law requires that all public school students shall participate in a statewide program of educational assessments per Ark. Code Ann. §§ 6-15-419, 6-15-433, 6-15-2009. In the 2015-16 school year, The Arkansas State Board of Education adopted the ACT Aspire summative assessment.
The ATLAS end-of-year summative assessment will be used to assess all Arkansas public school students in grades 3-8 in the content areas of English Language Arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. Students will take end of year exams for ELA in grades 9 and 10 and end of course exams for algebra I, geometry, and biology. Algebra I may be taken in eighth grade and replace the eighth grade mathematics assessment if a student is enrolled in algebra I at that time. All students will be required to participate in ATLAS 3-10 summative unless they qualify for an alternate assessment.
